In 1978, a man named Momi decided to open a small falafel stand in a small town in Israel, enlisting his family to work with him. What made the family’s falafel stand unique in the heart of the city was its flavor and, above all, its generosity of spirit. The family would serve empty pitas to the diners, allowing them to fill them to their heart’s desire. Over time, the business grew, and branches opened across Israel.
Momi’s grandson, Maor, arrived in Denver two years ago with a dream to continue his grandfather’s legacy of feeding and bringing joy to people with food that opens the heart. Maor opened the first Israeli restaurant in Denver, naming it “Asli,” which means “the real deal.” At Asli, we wake up every morning and prepare recipes that have been passed down through generations for 50 years. Authentic Israeli and Mediterranean food, fresh, healthy—the real deal.

What is Shawarma?
Shawarma is a beloved Middle Eastern dish that has become a global favorite. Originating in Turkey during the Ottoman Empire, the term “shawarma” comes from the Turkish word “döner,” meaning “turning.” Traditionally prepared by layering thinly sliced meat on a vertical spit, it’s roasted slowly and served in a pita, on a plate, or as a sandwich. Known for its bold spices and tender texture, shawarma offers endless variations with meats like chicken, beef, lamb, or turkey, paired with flavorful sauces like tahini or garlic. This versatile dish is not just a meal—it’s an experience.
Shawarma is the predecessor of popular dishes like Greek gyros and Mexican al pastor.
Packed with protein, vegetables, and flavorful spices, shawarma is both delicious and wholesome.
